University’s Language Policy
Under the language policy of The Education University of Hong Kong, all full-time undergraduate students (except senior-year entry students) are subject to Language Graduation Requirement (LGR) for English and Language Exit Requirement (LER) for Putonghua. Senior-year entry students are subject to Language Exit Requirement (LER) for English. For the details of LGR/LER such as attainment and exemption guidelines as well as relevant procedures, please refer to HERE. (Login by EdUHK student account)
All full-time undergraduate students1 enrolled in the UGC-funded undergraduate programmes will be sponsored ONCE by the University to take the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) and Putonghua Shuiping Ceshi (PSC).
-
- Senior-year entrants from UGC-funded programme who are exempted from Putonghua LER are still eligible for the one-off PSC sponsorship provided by the University, with a view to helping them further understand their language proficiency before graduation. It would be optional for these students to participate in the PSC examinations as well as to apply for the one-off sponsorship provided by the University. These senior-year entrants should achieve a PSC score that meet the requisite level (i.e., LER) in order to apply for the sponsorship.
Language Enhancement Programmes
The Chinese Enhancement Programme, English Enhancement Programme and Putonghua Enhancement Programme will be provided by the Centre for Language in Education (CLE) with a view to strengthening biliteral and trilingual enhancement support for all students.
Students of full-time undergraduate programmes (except senior-year entry students) are required to complete language enhancement programmes in Chinese, English and Putonghua.
-
- UGC-funded First-year-first-degree undergraduate students are required to complete three mandatory Chinese enhancement courses, four mandatory English enhancement courses and two mandatory Putonghua enhancement courses, over the four/five years of the programme.
- Senior-year entry students are required to complete a mandatory English enhancement programme.
Language Assessments
EdUHK English Proficiency Test (EEPT) [Applicable to Year 1 entry new non-English-major students and senior-year entry students only]
EEPT is an internal English proficiency test developed by the Centre for Language in Education (CLE). To understand and track students’ English proficiency level upon the entry at the University, students who do not possess the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education (HKDSE) Examination English results or other recognised English public examination (e.g. IELTS) results will be required to take EEPT as the English entry test. Students should pay due attention to emails in their EdUHK email account for the test date, time and venue upon the programme registration in August.
Tertiary Putonghua Test (TPT) [Applicable to Year 1 entry new non-Chinese-major students only]
TPT is an internal Putonghua proficiency test developed by the CLE. To understand and track students’ Putonghua proficiency level upon entry at the University, students will be required to take TPT as the Putonghua entry test. Students who attain the required level in this TPT will be exempted from taking the relevant Putonghua Enhancement courses. If students have already taken the Putonghua Shuiping Ceshi (PSC) and attained the required level, they do not need to attend the TPT nor take the relevant Putonghua Enhancement courses. Students who attain the level equivalent to or above their Putonghua LER in TPT (either entry test or exit test) will be regarded as having attained the Putonghua LER. Students should pay due attention to emails in their EdUHK email account for the test date, time and venue upon the programme registration in August.
